Dr. Cathy Vatterott is an Associate Professor of Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. After presenting at several educational conferences, participants began referring to her as the “homework lady”. As a former teacher and principal, and currently the parent of a college sophomore, she has experienced homework from a variety of perspectives. She is the author of numerous articles about education, including "Homework myths", “There’s something wrong with homework”, and two books—Academic Success through Empowering Students (National Middle School Association, 1999) and Becoming a Middle Level Teacher: Student focused teaching of early adolescents (McGraw Hill, 2007). She is frequent presenter at a variety of state and national educational conferences. She also serves as a consultant and workshop presenter for K-12 schools on a variety of topics.
She has presented her homework research to over 4800 educators and parents in the United States, Canada and Europe. Her presentations about homework have included “Rethinking Homework”, “Homework: Changing Attitudes, Changing Practices”, “Homework, Achievement, and a Balanced Life”, "Homework Support Programs", “Homework: Determining Priorities, Practices, and Policies”(a one-day Professional Development Institute for ASCD, spring 2004 and 2005), and "Homework: Equitable practices that support student learning"(a one-day Professional Development Institute for ASCD, spring 2007). She is currently writing a book about homework.
She has been interviewed as a homework expert for articles appearing in Parents Magazine, Better Homes and Gardens Magazine, Child Magazine, Working Mother Magazine, The Globe and Mail (Canada's national newspaper) and for articles appearing in a variety of U.S. newspapers, regional magazines, and educational websites. She has also been interviewed for radio and television.
